I don’t know about you, but one of the problems that I quite often find myself facing, is not being sure what to do for the best.
There’s so many complexities, so many different permutations, I’m sure you’ll agree, it’s very easy to get lost, particularly in nebulous, soft, subjective decision areas.
In fact, I’ve recognised this as one of the key areas that I want to eradicate, or dramatically reduce in my life, to make it more of an exciting adventure. Because for me it, certainly this not an exciting way to spend my time!
One of the things that I also notice is that I can spend a while pondering, reflecting, throwing around the options, and before I know it, I am distracting myself from my indecisiveness by checking my emails, looking at the share prices, seeing what’s happening on Twitter.
And before I know it, I’m spiralling down, getting further and further away from being able to make a firm decision.
So here’s one idea that I’m playing with at the moment, and I’ve used quite successfully on a number of occasions, that I wanted to share it with you.
As soon as you notice that you are unable to make a decision, stop, and think of three things that you can do, related or unrelated to the decision. But three very practical things that you can get stuck into, get moving on, and try to do those within the next half an hour.
Add to your list, before you get going, a fourth one – to review your decision making process.
Write them down, and then get going. Get excited.
This moves me instantly into a far more resourceful state. It creates an interrupt to the spiral that is taking me down, and down, and further away from the decision. Does it make the decision any easier? No. But what it does do, is it puts me into a far better place in 30 minutes time to start to think more practically, with a freer mind, as to how I’m gonna resolve the dilemma that I’m facing.
So try this, right now. If you are dithering, if you’re not able to make a decision, park it for thirty minutes, and find three very practical things that you can get stuck into, and complete.
