On occasion, people who complete the Influence Profile get Style Number 25 (there are 33 different styles). This report includes the phrase, “You may appear to others as a little bland.”
One individual I coached admitted to me that she seems to disappear, being neither one thing or another to people.
Regardless of where you score, there is an important point to take notice of.
The psychometric rates four dimensions of behaviour:
- Sociability and Networking
- Tact and Diplomacy
- Determination
- Emotional Control
It calibrates the degree to which an individual prefers to favour or avoid each of these classes of behaviour. As an ipsative psychometric, the questionnaire forces trade-offs between these dimensions and so arrives at a profile which is shockingly accurate to most.
Style 25 is the one given to an individual whose scores have settled around the middle ground, preferring to neither favour or avoid any type of behaviour in any significant way.
Ironically, this is actually the most useful style because theoretically, it will be easier for them to adapt their style to suit a more diverse range of personalities. Trouble is, if their actual behaviour has settled into the middle, they will lose impact.
Wherever you are on the dimensions, the point to note is that there is nothing right or wrong about where you are. The influence profile provides a framework to understand behaviour, and your job is to recognise the sort of behaviour that will most likely remove any distractions in the other persons mind, so they can focus on what you are communicating.
So, while the mean by preference is ideally in the middle of each of these dimensions, the standard deviation of your actual behaviour should be as high as possible. This would mean that you are moving up and down these dimensions as you engage with a wide group of people, indeed, you would become quite a colourful personality within the group and begin to stand out and become far more influential.
The call to action for everyone, is to become more adept at dancing up and down these dimensions and thus become a far more engaging and influential individual.
