Listen to them but don’t necessarily take their advice or agree with their analysis.
The problem with most experts is threefold.
Firstly, their skill and expertise has been built in the old world, before the big pause. What used to work may no longer work. The new rules fly in the face of the old rules. Therefore, in many cases (not all) the very foundation of their expertise has evaporated.
Secondly, their values and beliefs have been evolved around what worked for them, in the olden days. Their minds are likely unable to recognise what will no longer work – and they have no coding, no expertise, for new normal.
And thirdly, even if the rational part of their being can see this, their heart will probably pull them back, restrict their vision and action. It will prevent them from accepting the new world.
For example, one coaching client was telling me how all the senior partners were saying now difficult it was to see new clients. How everything was going to crumble.
“What are you believing them? What have you accepted their fate? They may be right, but you don’t have to presume they are right? Come on, do some thinking of your own and while they have their heads in the sand, you have the opportunity to disbelieve them, out-class them, out-perform them.”
Sure, you need to listen, and listen well. You still need their experience, knowledge and insights. You have much to learn from them. But, don’t ever just accept their authority especially as this new world is emerging.. Think carefully and then make your own decisions.
