Over the last few weeks I’ve had many conversations about handling difficult people, both coaching sessions and my Let’s Talk group. A few things have become apparent.
- If you are facing up to a difficult person, there will be flaws in the relationship.
- If you have a flaw in your relationship, odds-on there is a problem with trust.
Unfortunately, when there are trust issues, building trust is extremely hard to do when a problem is raging. Though hard, it can also be well worth the effort. If you can build trust while at the same time resolving a difficult problem, you’ll likely have a bond far stronger than would otherwise have been possible.
It’s a little like pushing things to the extreme and coming through with a big win.
Which all goes to show that your trust building skills have to be well-polished. And fast, because the speed with which stakeholders come and go means that trust has to be establish fast as the first problem is likely to be just around the corner.
To enhance your trust building skills, here are some of the top guides I’ve written over the years.
