If you’re like most people, you will tend to shy away from conflict and things you don’t like.
When you don’t like the politics, you’ll sky away from that too.
And that my friend, is a big problem – especially if you want to make progress with other people, because it is all about the politics.
Rightly so too, because politics is the art of decision-making, and if you can do that well, engage well with the way people are making decisions, you have a chance of swinging them in your directly – for good intent of course!
Seriously though, reluctant, half-hearted or ill-informed attempts to influence the politics (decision-making) rarely work out well. Preferring instead to concentrate on the work, you’ll pay scant attention to the politics and it will be relatively easy to outmanoeuvre you and block your agenda.
Sorry if you don’t like me saying this. But at some stage in your career you have to wake up to this reality and find ways to enjoy doing the politics. Yes, you can enjoy it – it’s really rather fun once you know what you’re doing!
