The power of expectation is both subtle and profound. It is the lens through which we view our interactions, predicaments, and opportunities. It’s not just about thinking positively; it’s about the practical, real-world impact of our anticipations on our behaviours and the reactions of those around us.
Imagine walking down a street and encountering someone with a clenched fist, a tense posture, and a confrontational stare. Your instinct would likely be to prepare for conflict or to retreat swiftly. In contrast, if the same person approached you with open palms and a friendly smile, your response would be entirely different. This scenario illustrates a simple truth: our expectations, often manifesting in our body language and attitude, can set the tone for the outcomes we experience.
In the organisational and stakeholder context, physical confrontations are, fortunately, rare. However, metaphorical ‘fights’ ensue when expectations are at odds. When we enter a meeting or negotiation anticipating confrontation, we unknowingly prepare ourselves for that reality. Our choice of words, tone, and body language can then inadvertently provoke the very conflict we hoped to avoid.
Throughout my coaching journey, a recurring theme has become evident: there’s an uncanny alignment between what my clients expect and what transpires in reality. If they go into a situation braced for adversity, that’s usually what they encounter. Conversely, when they enter with a hopeful, constructive mindset, positive results tend to follow.
Why does this happen? When we genuinely expect and hope for positive outcomes, our behaviour adapts accordingly. We appear more receptive, open, and constructive, prompting others to respond in kind. This phenomenon isn’t merely about positive thinking; it’s a tangible alignment of our internal expectations with external interactions.
What’s crucial is the conscious cultivation of our expectations. This is not about naively hoping for the best in every situation. It’s about purposefully adjusting our perspective to be more aligned with the results we desire. By expecting outcomes closer to what we want, we significantly increase the likelihood of those outcomes materialising.
Consider this exercise to better understand and harness the power of expectations:
- Reflect on a Current Challenge: Identify a situation you’re finding particularly tricky.
- Examine Your Beliefs: What do you currently believe about this situation or the people involved? Are these beliefs based on facts or assumptions?
- Entertain Alternatives: Are there other possible interpretations or beliefs that could be true? This step helps break the tunnel vision that sometimes clouds our judgment.
- Align with Desired Outcomes: To reach your desired result, what would be the most beneficial belief to hold? How can you shift your expectation in that direction?
In closing, while it’s natural to have preconceived notions, it’s invaluable to remember that our expectations shape our reality. By actively moulding our anticipations to align with what we want, we not only uplift our mindset but also steer our path closer to desired outcomes. As you navigate the intricate world of influence, let your expectations be both your compass and your ally.
