Everyone has a reputation, everyone.
A reputation is simply what other people expect of you.
What do people expect of you?
Unless you’ve put development focus on your reputation, chances are high that their expectations will be diverse, with different people expecting slightly different things.
Few businesses survive by confusing their customers. Businesses want to stand for something in the minds of their customers, and they spend millions building their reputations and brands.
Assuming you’re good at your job, fairly consistent in your work, most of these expectations will be positive – they’ll have a generally good impression of you.
But that is lame.
Do you really want to be just one of the good people, or do you want to stand out?
People who stand out, get attention, and a seemingly unfair amount of recognition. They become the role-models, the standard bearers, the ones who others aspire to emulate. They also get promoted and paid rather well.
Don’t you deserve to get proper recognition for what you are doing? And the appropriate reward for doing it?
Of course, you may not want to stand out, but a little time and effort can go an awful long way. You don’t have to spend the millions that corporates throw at building their reputation, just put a little time and effort into addressing the right areas in the right way.
For instance:
- Know your audience. Make sure you decide exactly who you wish to build your reputation with. Then understand their agendas, problems, values and most importantly, how you could add value to them.
- Know your competition. This is important. There is only so much air-time, and if you want to stand out, inevitably that means taking attention away from others. Who are these others, how might they react, and how are you different from them?
- Know your worth. This means connecting what you have to offer with what is desperately needed by your audience. Some re-positioning, translating is often required. And this has to begin in your mind, and be based on the evidence you have uncovered above.
From here, you can begin to decide on your strategy and start to execute.
You don’t have to be one of the crowd, you can easily adjust how others perceive you, when you start to follow these steps.
And I’ve seen amazing transformations, time and again. Maybe it’s your turn?
If you wish to get serious about this topic, for this month only (May 2021) I am opening the doors to my Building a Powerful Reputation online course. Normally only available to Private Clients, I’ve decided to open this up because I sense it could be timely for many people to turn their attention to their reputation and give them the edge, whatever is just around the corner.
