Talking with an up and coming banker in New York. He expressed the view, based on what he was noticing, that it is becoming increasingly important that people climbing the corporate ladder must have a strong external profile, on social media and the like. He believes, you must stand for something, and demonstrate it publicly.
If you wish to maximise your potential, I agree wholeheartedly.
Of course, it is well known that recruiters scour social media for the footprint of people they are thinking of hiring. Looking at what they’ve been up to, the ideas and the scandal they have been sharing. So, the next logical extension is that they will do this for those they are thinking about promoting too.
Curiously, when I think back to my days in GCHQ, every year all employees were subjected to a security review. They would do a bit of digging, interview you, even wire you up to a polygraph. What they wanted to know was, are you still safe to have your security clearances. Today, you don’t need to be trained in espionage to ferret out what people have been getting up to in their private lives.
But there is a more positive angle too. I’ve long held the view that the best promotion candidates are those who have an opinion, have a vision. If you are confident enough to express that in the public domain, that demonstrates potential.
So perhaps, the exceptional performers in large organisations tomorrow will be more like celebrities.
What implications could this have for you?
