It would be reasonable to assume that you and your boss have the same agenda, when it comes to you work. However, your priorities may well be different.
Here’s a quick test you can do.
Quick as you can, jot down the top 3-5 items on your agenda. Make sure to write them down in priority order. Which is most important?
When I ask coaching clients to do this, 9/10 focus on the activities they have to complete, or the strategies they have to implement, to get the results required of them. That’s natural, and nothing wrong with that, until it comes to engaging with the boss.
You see, for most (good) bosses, their priority when it comes to you is that you deliver the results they need. They will have a varying level of interest in your how. The how is of critical importance to you, because that’s what you’ve got to do to deliver the result and it shapes the things you do each day.
Remember this when you communicate with the boss, especially one you struggle to see, or only touch base with infrequently. Think and communicate what you are doing in terms of their focus and priorities. If they want to know more about the how, they’ll ask.
