One of my big messages is that if you want to get good at influence, and the politics, you have to put more time into learning about it, and figuring out how it works in your environment.
“Brilliant idea Colin, but I’ve got plenty to do already.”
And that becomes a problem.
When people say they don’t have the time, I counter with that’s because you’re not making it a priority. Where there is a will, there is a way. You’ve just got to find it. And the effort requires that you are motivated to innovate and transform so that you can raise it as a priority.
Yet there is a real issue here too.
What is the point in getting good at influence if you get fired in the meantime for not delivering on what your boss expects.
Yup, and I’m sure that’s what keeps you stuck where you are.
So, how to resolve these conflicting demands.
Get an answer to the question:
“What do you have to influence today so you can find the time to prepare to influence more of tomorrow?”
Once you’ve answered this, get busy taking that action, but beware.
As you create more space to invest into your tomorrow, make sure it doesn’t get filled with more of today’s work!
