A storm of epic proportions, and likely heading in your direction. You heard it here first, and while everyone is looking elsewhere.
This storm, a storm the like of which you’ve never seen before, whose ferocity will sweep you off your feet and out to sea so fast that, well, you’ll not find land for a long time. Flash-flood is an inadequate term.
Question is, are you prepared for what will come to pass?
After the financial crash of 2008, my friend (the late Dr. Gary Ranker) and I compared notes. We both witnessed the rapid decline of the political behaviour surrounding our clients – it got ugly. Their organisations got hit hard, and executives started losing their jobs – positions they had invested huge intellectual, social and emotional capital in building. Talk of collaboration was naive or suicidal. Gary actually thought it was the worst he had seen in his 30-year coaching career.
Political rivalry, foul-play and Machiavellian tactics ran riot. They cried “we’re in this together” “innovate and collaborate” and all the same phrases that echo round your virtual meetings today.
But, when the chips were down, and the organisation started to fail, it was each person for themselves.
It could easily be argued that we are in the eye of the storm. The lockdown has wrought havoc even in the quietest corners of the landscape, and the fine people at the top are working hard to respond, very hard indeed.

Innovation, creativity, is in overdrive and some pretty big reconfigurations will happen, are happening. Supply chains, industries, market segments, all changing, fast. As the once powerful players stumble, nimble aspirants smell their weakness.
Right now, we cannot predict how the reconfiguration will land, nor who the winners and losers will be. My suspicion is that the die is already cast, and the winners have already made the right moves, and the losers have already sealed their fate, even though they don’t yet realise it.
But what I can say with a high degree of certainty, is that the conditions are already observable, that will lead to success or failure. In fact, it doesn’t take very long at all to analyse this because the pattern is well-documented. And once observed, preparations can begin.
This may seem like a bold claim, but if you think about it, you can probably do that too – possibly, well, I guess that depends on how good you are at keeping your eyes and ears open, and recognising the patterns.
Anyway, here are two questions to end with, and two questions that you absolutely must get the answers to:-
- What trajectory is your organisation on?
- Are you in a good position if that comes to pass?
You need to get these answered fast, and then start to take mitigating and contingent action, ahead of your erstwhile colleagues. Is this why so many clients don’t even tell their friends they work with me?
Anyhow, stay safe, you know where I am.
