If you are not in control of your emotions, who is?
One of the most important aspects of professional performance is managing your emotions, in a deliberate and premeditated way, for an intentional impact. When you can do this, you have achieved what I refer to as Emotional Dexterity.
But, how many can do this, with ease?
For most people, the emotions they experiences are outside of their control, at least initially. Recently, one very senior head-hunter told me he had never met anyone who could control their emotions – I beg to differ.
To begin, you have to grow your awareness of the problem. Watch your emotions in play and begin to see what triggers them – and who?
Second, it is essential to make a determination that you want to be different, to gain more control of what is happening within. This means accepting where you are, recognising the pitfalls of the your current reactions, and then setting a vision for how you wish to be.
Then you need to begin practicing. Starting to recode your responses, your habits, and ultimately, engage with different outcomes.
All of this means that you need to make this a priority for yout self-development. Something you reflect on almost daily. Become obsessive about it, and make sure you clean up your act, and stop allowing other people and things to control your inner life.
Here are some resources to help you begin develop your emotional dexterity.
