The topics you choose to include in an influence coaching programme will naturally vary depending on the needs of your client.
Below is an example proposal structure together with the content that I commonly put into coaching proposals. I have no doubt you have your own way of doing things, so, as with all of these articles, I share this in case it helps.
Executive Coaching/Mentoring Proposal: Colin
Colin has recently been appointed Head of Operations (Global). To establish him in this role, and meet his objectives, he has recognised that he needs to become more adept at influencing his peers and other senior executives. Following an introductory call on 23rd April, the following outline approach is recommended.
Program of Eight Sessions:
- Objectives and Challenges. Finalize business deliverable against which learning will be applied and discuss key influencing challenges.
- Personal Brand / Impression Management. Consider desired impression and how to maximise impact and brand realization.
- Stakeholder Management. Challenging approach and strategy for key stakeholders around business deliverable.
- Organizational Power / Group Dynamics. Sources of power at play around individual and how to navigate group dynamics for greater results.
- Influencing Styles. Understanding own preferred style and appreciating the distraction this can cause and discover when to adapt for more effective influence.
- Personal Power. Understanding current and future sources of power that can be leveraged as a more efficient means of influence.
- Political Tactics. Learning how others play the game and how to minimize the risk of sabotage without impacting personal integrity.
- Review and Close. Check progress again original aims and plan next steps.
Terms / Notes
- If required, this program will use a control document to manage confidentiality between client and HR.
- All discussions will be completely confidential unless the client chooses to share with others.
- All sessions will apply learning to the stated business objective. This outline is a guide and can be adapted if necessary as we progress.
- Each session will provide the opportunity to discuss current events beyond the objective.
- Sessions conducted remotely via Skype or telephone at mutually convenient time, preferably evening.
- Each session 45-60 minutes fee of £x (+VAT @ 20%) payable on engagement on 30 day terms[i].
- Session expected to complete by end June.
- Influencing Styles session contains an online diagnostic @ £x (no VAT).
- A booked session will be payable unless 24 hours’ notice is given of the need to change the date/time.
- All client documents full secured on password protected and encrypted servers.

Comments on this example
- This was the result of a 30 minute call with this senior executive who I had not met before.
- If you’ve not noticed it before, I am rather brisk and to the point. Senior clients like that but adapt appropriate to your clients.
- Notice the US spellings. That’s the extent I go to in order to adapt to the client’s language.
- Usually, session two comes much further in to the programme, however, during the call it became obvious that it needed to happen immediately as he was new to the role and making first impressions all over the place!
