“Think lucky and you’ll be lucky!”
Those words oft uttered by my father regularly ring in my mind.
And, I totally believe this to be the case, yet just the tip of the iceberg.
Time and again I am reminded in my Private Client coaching that people tend to get what they expect to get.
If they expect to have a hard time in an upcoming meeting, usually they do. If they expect to have a straightforward negotiation, they generally do. And so it goes on.
This is not the stuff of magic or manifestation from The Secret, it’s the stuff of reality.
The way it works is simple.
When you settle on an expected outcome, you adjust your approach. Your behaviour, words, posture all change to align with your expectations. This gets picked up by those around you. It influences their expectations. They begin to expect what you re expecting and adjust their behaviour too. As the alignment continues, the outcome become more and more likely.
Personally I think it goes a little beyond the tangible behaviours but we don’t need to go there just yet. For now, accept that your expectations influence those around you because of the subtle changes you demonstrate.
The big question becomes:
How are you managing your own expectations?
And I don’t mean hoping for the best. I mean, expecting the best and acting like you believe it.
Habit formation time eh?
