Now is a moment where the new normal will be shaped. New paradigms will be created. Today, not tomorrow.
The decisions taken by leaders today will have far-reaching effects. Some of the most successful organisations will disappear as a result of their decisions today. Outliers will find ways to dominate their sectors tomorrow, based on the decisions they take today.
Business models are being pulverised and supply chains shattered. At every turn, assumptions about normal are being obliterated. Careers are about to be made, and careers are about to be lost.
Seriously, there has never been a better opportunity to make a huge positive impact.
But how do you do that, in a world that has its head between its knees?
Here’s how.
You learn to influence like never before, you learn to change paradigms.
And this is just what we are doing, and it is serious business, it is fun business. Taking the wreaking ball to normal, smashing through boundaries like they didn’t even exist. Well they don’t, not any more.
One challenge several clients this week have highlighted is the problem of how to influence against the tide. They know they are on their own, yet they also know they cannot do it alone. So, how do you influence a hugely different vision into a predominate climate of fear and crisis?
There are many things that you can do, and I’ve turned these into nine Paradigm Shifting Principles.
Principle No. 4: Design the Nine
Instead of attempting to influence a 90° turn in a senior team travelling at 100mph, the new breed of paradigm shifters design a series of 10° moves. It is not possible to slow down enough to take the required sharp right, but nudging in that direction with smaller turns doesn’t require slowing down. Just another turn a little towards the goal. It also doesn’t need to driver to take their eyes off the crisis road they are hurtling down. That would be dangerous indeed.
This takes planning, creativity and a strategic mind. It also takes a little investment of time and lost progress. Sharp right would be best, but not at the cost of crashing the car.
But, don’t do this without also attending to the other eight principles.
