What are you prepared to do in order to get what you want?
Many people approaching the development of their influencing skills get hijacked by their sense of integrity. When I start talking about approaches they could use to become more influential during a workshop, some people start to baulk. They feel that what is being suggested is manipulative. As such, it should form no part of what they do.
Let’s face it, nobody likes to feel they have been manipulated into doing something which is against their interests. Sales people are notorious for doing this, and increasingly everyone is on their guard lest they fall prey to one of these unscrupulous characters.
Ultimately, what it comes down to is where you draw the line between what is okay and what is not. Many people don’t consciously draw that line, and this can create a problem. Also, many people drew the line a very long time ago. Things change, people change, and perhaps the line needs to be reviewed.
I’m pretty clear where my line is, and in the work I do, it performs extremely well as a moderator of my actions. But where is your line? And that’s the key, you have to be comfortable with what you do else you will end up regretting or feeling bad about the actions you take.
I’ve written quite a lot on this topic already, so rather than regurgitate it, here are a collection of articles that will help you to understand this topic, and how it relates to you and also, provide you with the help to re-evaluate your own position.
