There is an aspect of leadership that is rarely talked about that offers huge potential in terms of performance. It is highly valued by team members, essential to the organisation, and fun to do. But most leaders are making mistakes in this area that could cost them dear.
Leading from the front, within the wider organisation.
This involves representing the interests of the team in the wider organisation. Being their ambassador, their champion, protector, promoter.
Once you’ve got the team performing well, this is the main work you have to do. Which actually pulls you away from them, physically, if you are not careful.
The absent boss, caucusing, schmoozing, doing – who knows what?
As you lead the charge, don’t give them an excuse to get de-motivated (or worse). Show them what you are doing. for them. Enlist their help. You don’t have to do it on your own.
Show them the politics. Develop their understanding, and their capability too.
In this manner, you will inspire even the best performers. You’ll have willing scouts to look over the distant horizons, and a force that you can count on to cover your back.
Oh, and if you really are just looking out for your own interests, beware the mutiny.
