On workshops a favourite question I challenge delegates with is why has the human race been so successful?
Usually, the answer is because of its ability to change.
Wrong.
The reason why the human race has been so successful is because of its unwillingness to change (something that is working) until it absolutely has to. Then is changes fast.
No wonder change programmes struggle to implement.
A long time ago I heard a story of a traveller passing a house on the prairie. On the porch a dog was sitting, calmly enjoying the view. The dog was sitting on a nail and this puzzled the traveller.
“Why are you sitting on a nail?”
“Because it doesn’t hurt enough to move.”
This applies to every level of analysis, from whole populations down to individuals. The pain has to be enough to make change more appealing.
Now, at a global level, the pain is growing faster than the virus. More and more individuals are ramping up their experience of pain, fuelled by an excited media.
Which means, change is coming, even to those hardy souls who confidently avoid the news, are financially secure and of robust health. Nobody will be immune to the environmental changes that will sweep through the world.
So, my challenge to you is this:
In this world where the unimaginable is happening, is this your opportunity to think and do the unimaginable? Is this your opportunity to get ahead of the wave and reposition yourself ready for when the world begins to calm?
