The biggest problem with introverts is that they identify with being an introvert.
They say:
- “Oh, I’m an introvert which makes networking uncomfortable.”
- “I can’t do all this small talk.”
- “I feel awkward because I’m so shy.”
And many similar things that serve only one purpose, even if they don’t realise it.
All of these statements, or thoughts, make the problem worse. They are destructive, reinforcing the belief, and the connection with introversion.
If you’re like this, using all this destructive self-talk, STOP IT!
Ah, but I hear you cry, “How can I when I am an introvert?” “I’ve been like it all my life, it’s my personality!”
Oh yes, that old chestnut.
You can’t change your personality can you? Well, if you believe that you’ll believe anything.
Personalities are changing all the time, and so is yours. Most of those changes go unnoticed, incremental little steps, evolution over time. But change is always happening.
And you can change from introvert to extrovert too, if you want to.
How do I know that? Because I’ve seen many people do it. And to be honest with you, I used to be an introvert too. Well, I guess I still am to an extent. But I can also be an extrovert like the best of them, when I judge it appropriate. In fact, I really enjoy those times when I’m being an extrovert.
So, maybe I’m not a recovering introvert, but a flexivert – is that even a word?
