Navigating the labyrinth of power and politics can seem a daunting task, especially when approached with disdain or reluctance. Yet, if one pivotal emotion is incorporated into this journey, the entire perspective can be transformed: Curiosity.
A few years ago, I conducted a research, posing the question: “Is politics a necessary evil or a total waste of time?”. The enlightening responses signalled an urgent need for a shift in our perception of politics and power dynamics. Rather than viewing it as a cumbersome chore, understanding politics should be seen as an intriguing puzzle waiting to be solved. Embracing this perspective stems from an insatiable curiosity.
Understanding how influence operates in organisational settings requires not just an investment of time, but a genuine interest. Making emotional investments based on negative perceptions will lead to procrastination and resistance. It is thus crucial to disentangle one’s emotions from the process and genuinely delve into the depths of understanding. Only then can one amass the vast knowledge required to wield influence effectively.
To ease this voyage, envision politics as an enigma. Ask questions like, “Why was a particular decision made?”, “What motivations drive certain actions?”, or “How do different pieces fit into the grand puzzle?”. Such inquiries not only deepen understanding but also make the journey enjoyable. Furthermore, roping in colleagues or friends to dissect and discuss these puzzles can amplify the intrigue and make the learning process communal and fun.
While it might be tempting to shelve this pursuit, given the myriad of other responsibilities, one cannot understate its importance, especially as one climbs the organisational ladder. The higher the position, the more significant the role of understanding power and politics becomes.
To illustrate the effectiveness of this approach, consider the following exercise:
- Recall a Political Scenario: Reflect on a political situation you’re familiar with. It could be a personal experience or an anecdote from someone you know.
- Narrate Your Tale:Transform this scenario into a compelling story, either in written form or mentally, as if sharing it with a dear friend.
- Dramatise Your Account: Add some flair to your story. Imagine it as a captivating drama unfolding on stage or screen. What would the plot twists be? How might it unravel in a theatrical setting?
This exercise might feel unusual, but it’s an engaging way to view politics differently. It helps in spotting the intrigue, discovering hidden motivations, and untangling the intricacies of power games. However, a word of caution: whilst it’s enjoyable to craft stories, ensure it doesn’t devolve into mere gossip.
Taking Action
- Be Observant: At every juncture, hunt for the hidden layers, the subtle cues, and the unsaid narratives.
- Fantasise Thoughtfully: Allow your imagination to wander and think about the clandestine happenings behind the scenes.
- Validate Your Theories: Work rigorously to either confirm or refute your hypotheses.
In conclusion, understanding power and politics needn’t be a tedious task. With an ample dose of curiosity and a zest for uncovering hidden narratives, it becomes a captivating journey.
Remember, every political scenario presents a puzzle, waiting to be pieced together by an inquisitive mind. Cultivate that curiosity, and the world of influence opens its doors wide.
