Second call with Alan today. He’s a senior strategy guy in a large financial services firm. Last month he became one of my Private Clients.
Things are starting to happen, and you need to pay attention because we can all learn from this, me included.
“Alan, what are the three biggest changes for you since our first call?”
Firstly, he and his stakeholders are all crystal clear on what he wants to achieve – his next position. When we first spoke, it was all a little vague, it could be this, it could be that. After a tough challenge from yours truly, and a short period of reflection, he landed the vision. And then he went straight to work selling the idea.
Lessons
- Everyone needs somebody else to push them towards clarity, and ask the questions that need to be asked.
- Unless you are clear about what you want, stakeholders are unlikely to take any real action.
- Once you have the goal on the table, the debate then turns to the obstacles and challenges.
Secondly, he now believes in his goal. This took a little unpicking, but it became clear that he is now 100% committed to making it happen. Before he was wavering between a few options. He is also 100% certain that providing he applies himself, he can reach the goal.

Lessons
- You cannot commit 100% to a goal until you know exactly what it is (yes, an obvious but necessary reminder).
- The process of arriving at the goal specification requires a lot of thought, and during that process, the belief grows that it is achievable. Belief needs to be thought about.
- A clear decision and commitment frees the time, energy and action for achievement.
Thirdly? Well to quote Alan “Aren’t two enough for a week?” I relented.
Then, in our second short session, we got busy on the actions he will take over the next week to move it forward.
Take Note
- Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, greater clarity on your goals brings amazing economies of effort and a huge boost to motivation.
- Making clear decisions about what you want to achieve dramatically increases the probability that you’ll arrive at your destination (destiny?).
Now, over to you – what are you going to do to bring greater clarity your goals?
