Since influence is the stand-out skill of today, it pays dividends to invest in developing your capability. But, you don’t need to go on a course to get better at it, all you have to do is look around you, think, then experiment.
Tell you what, try this exercise on a different individual each week and see what happens within a month.
Think of someone you consider to be highly influential.
- Why do you think that?
- Recall, in detail, a recent example of their influence.
- What did they do particularly well?
- How could they have done it even better?
- What do they do that you could do more of?
- What should you be doing less of?
- What specific action are you going to take this week to become more influential?
Now stop thinking and start acting.
And don’t forget, do this again next week.
