For years, the division between personal and professional life has been questioned. For years, the dominant view is that it is useful/necessary to maintain that split. Now, things could be changing – fast!
Several discussions recently have highlighted the problem of trust.
There is growing cynicism of national political leaders’ facade of probity. Private lives found to be at odds with public rhetoric. And now, questions are being asked of the private lives of executives.
Why?
Because people want to know who they are dealing with. Can they trust the whole person, not just the face they choose to display at work?
In times past, managers and leaders did this by getting to know people personal, perhaps with a beer after work, the occasional office party. Today, geographic barriers make this more difficult, and also, the audience for senior managers is growing.
Celebrity executives? Open to public gaze, critique and judgment.
Where does the threshold exist – I think it is potentially moving down the ranks with more senior managers falling into the public domain – with a public audience.
One executive noted the increasing role of public profiles in promotion decisions. Another complained about the growing transparency – what was once hidden behind company walls is not open to public scrutiny. I guess the growing rate of corporate scandals is working its way through to the public awareness.
If this trend grows, what are the implications for those who wish to be exceptional tomorrow?
- Do they need a deliberate (and careful) personal social media policy?
- Not sharing details of one’s personal life creates a big gaps in the trust assessment. But, how can you fill that gap, and sate the desire people have to know who you really are?
- How long with you be able to hold high office without a public presence?
- What roles does this apply to? What roles does this not apply to?
- Are you ready to become a celebrity?
This takes self-promotion and publicity to a new level!
