Once you’ve decided where you want to build your reputation, another thing to consider, as you’re doing the analysis of the environment, is what reputations are already there? This is important because there is a finite amount of air time for all of the reputations in that arena can get. So in a way, you could conceptualise this is all the reputations are jockeying for position, vying for the limelight, for the spotlight, to get the attention to come to them.
And so what you’re going to do, if you are determined to create a reputation for yourself, is to muscle into that (perhaps) quite crowded environment, to try carve out a little bit of the attention space for you.
I don’t want to overrate this. I don’t want to make it far more than it is. But, be wise to the potential that there could be a backlash. So some of those reputations, maybe those big egos, might actually not be happy for you entering the stage. For you attempting to get some of the limelight. Because it may pull the attention away from them.
I’m not saying you should hold back because of that. I’m not saying that you should decide to stay where you are and not attempt to go forward and do it. I’m just saying be very aware that there could be repercussions. If you are highly skilled, you can be very successful, you’ve got a great amount to offer that particular organisation, just be mindful of what actions they might take in order to undermine you.
And yes, we are talking about the politics. So you’ve got to be very mindful of the way they may play the politics to pull the rug out from under your feet, to put you back into your place because some of them will be saying “Who on earth does he think he is? What does she think she’s doing coming over here?”
They’ll never vocalise that. Of course they’ll never say it out loud. But they’ll be thinking about it. And they’ll be acting on that basis as well. So just be wise, be careful, and make sure that you go out in a way that is going to maximise the air time that you get without stirring up too much trouble.
