“If you don’t give me a crisis, I’m going to make one.”
These words, expressed with humour, ushering in my stint as a crisis manager.
What I had noticed is that if you wanted to get on, you either had to perform exceptionally well in your (highly valued) job, or squeeze through against the odds on big hairy-arsed problems.
Later, I moved to an organisation that was a mess, much to the surprise of my friends. “Why go somewhere everything is running well?”
Crises and big problems are valuable to ambitious people.
They are exciting, visible, amazing learning opportunities – providing you can hack it and at least just get through.
Today, in every way, we are celebrating and living in a crisis culture.
