If you don’t do politics…
…you are either naive, stupid or negligent.
Well, I suppose you might also be lacking in ambition or simply can’t be bothered.
Whatever, attempting to deny the reality that workplace politics surrounds everything you do, or avoiding engaging in politics is madness.
And, destined to failure.
Why?
Because the politics is how decisions get made, at an individual or group level. The politics are the fluid dynamic of influence that promotes and surrounds all rational argument.
The only people who can safely avoid engaging in the politics are the totally powerless and the totally powerful.
Few people want, or actual have, either.
Which means you have to engage in it, take it seriously and find ways to handle the politics to ensure that your work fulfils its potential.
If you want to do all this, begin by laying aside your negative emotions to this feature of organisational life.
