Back in 2001 my opening words to a new cohort of highly motivated top-talent caused a stir. Attending the inaugural event of our prestigious leadership development programme, they saw my then colleague fall off her chair when I began, “If you were really talented, you wouldn’t need us.”
I meant it then, and I mean it now. If you were really talented, you wouldn’t need people like me. And as then, I’ll quickly follow with…
“But I believe you are talented and have high potential. Our role right now, is to show you how to unleash your talent, and become enthusiastic learners. Equipped and capable of recognising what you need to learn to solve the challenges of today and tomorrow. Skilled at learning fast, very fast, so you can deliver exceptional results.”
Here’s a challenge to you right now, here in 2020…
Do you have high potential?
Are you aware enough to know what you need to learn?
Can you learn, fast, and independently?
Why independently?
Because, if you learn what everyone else is learning, you’ll be able to do what everyone else can do. Teaching today is too heavily focused on the past which will not create the future.
The best musicians (I’m told) only had formal education to a basic level. Then they went their own way.
Will you find your own way?
Claire, if she’s listening, will remember we used to call them Futurists! Indeed, some of t hem are still following me here, listening, learning and banging in the results.
Your choice.
