Now it is time to start applying this to you. What is it about you which helps you to influence other people? Why do people do what you want them to do? How are you able to land your project and get people collaborating effectively?
Using the cards again, sort them in your own personal order. Make sure and think of specific examples of when you have been influential. Think carefully enough about it that you can be ready to explain your rationale to a friend. In fact, why don’t you do that now? As with all of these exercises, they are much better shared and explored with friends and colleagues.
Once you have finalised your order, enter them in your notebook in another column.
The results
Before you move on, you might find it useful to take a look at the overall table you have created in your notebook. What differences do you notice between the individuals you have considered? How does their power differ from your own? Are there any common themes about your selections, for instance, did Character always come first? Just pause a moment and reflect on what you have done.
Note: As part of the Strategic Influencer Programme, you should also apply this exercise to relevant and powerful groups that you have noticed in your arena.
