In the last article (A Healthy Dose of Obsession) I alluded to the idea that you need to step into your new reputation as soon as possible, and begin to live it. This means you will begin to do things differently and start to appear as a slightly different person. Consequently, others will begin to notice — which is just what you want but, be careful.
As soon as you stick your head out and appear different from what you were before, all manner of things will start to happen, and not all of them are positive. For instance:
- “Who on earth does he think he is?”
- “Ah, look who’s been on a new course.”
- “It’s okay, it’ll all be forgotten again very soon.”
- “Ha, ha, the eternal optimist!”
Although unwelcome, these responses are easily countered with consistent delivery over time. More serious are reactions such as:
- “Someone needs to be put back in their place.”
- “Hmm, looks like she’s trying to take over my role.”
- “This could threaten my promotion.”
- “He’s taking attention away from me.”
All of these are likely to lead to action by others to hinder your development or the establishment of your reputation. The risk they represent will depend on the threat you are perceived to pose (perceived not actual). The more ambitious you are with your reputation, the more likely others are going to feel threatened in some way.
It would be easy to say, “To hell with them, I’m on my way regardless.” A shade naïve I think.
Before you rush down that route, pause a moment and consider:
- Who will be adversely affected if you achieve your desired reputation?
- How will this affect their ambitions and agendas?
- What risk do they pose to your progress?
- What potential is there for them to join forces to stop you?
- How can you convert them into advocates?
- Who is it safe to ignore?
- What actions must you take?
I’m all for being bold, learning fast and moving faster – just make sure and do it prudently. In the next article I will share with you some ways of reducing the risks dramatically.
