To make handling the politics easy, the very best thing you can do is get curious.
Why?
Because you have a lot of work to do.
Only when you have done that work will it become easy.
That work involves building relationships, understanding agendas, considering scenarios, dealing with Machiavellian characters, creating goodwill, doing favours, helping people in trouble, and much more besides.
None of which you have time for, because you have a proper job to do.
Yet, as I’ve said before, unless you learn how to handle the politics, you’re going nowhere fast.
Which means, you have to find the time, to adjust your priorities, and want to do all this political work.
Then, it will be much easier to schedule those informal meetings to learn what is going on.
The absolute best way I’ve found to do that, is to get curious, to become genuinely fascinated by the politics, the agendas, what makes people tick, and how they make decisions.
The more interested you are, the more likely you will do the work and gain the benefit ultimate benefit gained from being able to handle the politics with ease and integrity – you will achieve what you want to achieve.
Simply being motivated to learn more so you can deliver on a given project or initiative is not enough. That will only help you discover what is obviously relevant to your current cause.
When you ignite an insatiable curiosity, you’ll serendipitously discover the most valuable nuggets of political intelligence that will help propel you forward faster, and more safely, than anyone else.
And, with your insatiable curiously aroused, you’ll also be having fun – lots of it.
