Forgive me, at times I have a tendency to be a tad blunt.
If you’ve been loitering here with me for a while, you will recognise this as my passion for straight-talking – with the very best of intentions for your success.
So, here goes…
If you are not “whistling while you work” you are doing something wrong.
Somewhere along the way, you have made some wrong choices.
You will recall, all seven of the dwarves went to work whistling and singing, even Sleepy. They all came home to Snow White at the end of a hard day, with a similar spring in their step – even Grumpy.
There may well be some very rational reasons why you’re not having a good time at the moment. I get that. But that does not excuse you from the choices you have made.
Here’s a little example.
The other week an acquaintance of mine was moaning about a colleague. Calling him some quite unpublishable names. Making her life at work a misery. Justification came with a litany of heinous crimes, “everyone thinks the same!”
Okay, fair enough, that’s one way to choose to react to some pretty shocking behaviour.
What other choices could my friend have made instead? Deciding instead to judge the behaviour as petty, immature or even comical would be other choices. The behaviour doesn’t change with these alternatives, but my friends experience would.
Another provocation comes with my article from years ago begging the question, what are you tolerating? A couple of weeks ago I was consulted by someone who was really down in the dumps about their job. “How long have you been feeling like this?” Three years – three years! When will a new choice be made? Enough!
Personally, I believe strongly that everyone should be experiencing their work as an exciting adventure – and I know that many of you also aspire to this, which is why I created my Blueprint for an Exciting Adventure at Work.
Now, rather than press the point, let me finish this with a call to action if you are not whistling while you work…
What choices do you need to make to dramatically improve your experience of work, so you can whistle while you work?
Come on, don’t just skim over this, answer the question, even if it takes you a few days or weeks. Don’t you deserve it?
Oh, and if you are happy at work, and you are not showing it…
…shame on you!
For all you curmudgeons out there, here is a serious message for you, make sure to watch to the end!
